Understanding Electricity in Uganda
In Uganda, the electricity grid operates at 240V and 50Hz. This 220V–240V standard is shared by the vast majority of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. If you are visiting from a country with a 110V–120V supply (such as the United States, Canada, or Japan), you must pay close attention to device voltage ratings before plugging anything into a Type G outlet.
United States & Canada (120V, Type A/B)
Voltage is higher (240V vs 120V). Dual-voltage electronics work normally, but 120V-only appliances require a step-down voltage converter.
United Kingdom (230V, Type G)
Voltage is fully compatible (240V). A travel adapter is only required if Uganda does not use British Type G sockets.
European Union (230V, Type C/F)
Voltage (240V) matches the European standard. Europlugs (Type C) fit natively if Type C, E, F, or L sockets are listed.
Australia & New Zealand (230V, Type I)
Voltage is compatible (240V). An adapter is only necessary if Type I outlets are not present in Uganda.

A common mistake travelers make in Uganda is assuming that a simple travel adapter plug converts electricity. Adapters only change the physical prong shape to fit Type G sockets; they do not alter electrical voltage. Understanding the distinction between electronics and high-wattage appliances is critical to protecting your gear.
Dual-Voltage IT Devices & Chargers
Almost all modern portable electronics are manufactured with switched-mode power supplies that automatically accept any voltage between 100V and 240V at 50–60Hz. When traveling in Uganda, these devices can be connected directly to 240V power using only a Type G plug adapter. Always verify by looking for 'INPUT: 100-240V' printed in fine print on the AC adapter.

Single-Voltage Heating Appliances
High-wattage appliances containing heating elements or strong motors are often built for a single regional voltage. Connecting a North American 120V hair dryer to a 240V outlet in Uganda without a heavy-duty transformer will destroy the heating element instantaneously and poses a serious fire hazard.

Electrical Safety & Packing Advice for Uganda
Fire Hazard Warning: Avoid Domestic Surge Protectors Abroad
Never pack a North American 120V power strip equipped with surge protection when traveling to Uganda. Domestic surge protectors use Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) designed to clamp voltage spikes above 120V. When plugged into a 240V outlet in Uganda, the MOV interprets the normal 230V line as a massive surge, causing the strip to overheat, pop, or catch fire. Always use plain, non-surge-protected travel power strips rated for 250V.

We strongly advise against bringing standard North American 120V hair dryers or curling irons to Uganda. High-wattage heating elements will burn out immediately on 240V power unless connected to a heavy, high-capacity transformer. Using a dual-voltage travel dryer is safer and much lighter.
